ATM machines have become part our way of life. Using a automated teller safely requires awareness and some planning. They bid convenience to those on the run, but at the same time have an element of risk. Between 7pm and 4am, the machines process only 11% of the total daily transactions but suffer the majority of the crime.

Who Are the Robbers?
ATM thieves are generally men under 25 years of age and most work alone. Just a bank ATM machine is perforate all the time doesn't mean it is always safe to use it.

ATM Robbery Considerations
Many ATM crimes occur at night amongst 7pm and midnight during the time the machine only produces a fraction of the daily transactions. Many ATM robbery victims are ladies and in are alone when attacked. ATM thieves usually position themselves nearby and wait for a victim to come along and take out cash. Most ATM robbers used a pistol or claimed to have a recondite weapon when confronting the victim and capture their cash. Most claim that they at no time saw the robber coming. ATMs inside busy supermarkets are considered safe.

Pick a Safe Location
Use only ATM kiosks in well-lighted, high-traffic areas. Beware of obvious hiding spots like shrubs or overgrown trees. Don't use ATMs that are remote or hidden like those regional aback buildings, pillars, walls, or out of public view. Robbers like feasible evasion routes like nearby highway on-ramps or high speed thru-streets.

Get a record of ATM locations from your bank and keep it in your car. ATM thieves like to surprise you and want no witnesses. Don't use ATMs at night. Pick an ATM that looks and feels safer, even if it is a couple of miles out of the way. When you drive up to an ATM location, watch the area for any suspicious activity. Take someone with you at night, if you can. When you an ATM on foot be prepared and have your ATM card ready. If you see anyone suspicious that is lurking nearby or sitting by themselves in a car, drive away. After inserting your card and your PIN number keep an eye out right and left you. Memorize your personal PIN number to prevent and speed the transaction. Tell the suspicious person in a loud, confident bellows to 'back-off' and leave you alone. Never accept an invitation to help or suit for help from a suspicious person during the interval at the machine.

Be Alert
If anyone suspicious or looking dangerous comes up terminate your transaction and leave immediately. It is much easier to apologize later or suffer some embarrassment for your fear than to become a robbery victim. This is designed to startle the person and give you time to flee. Make sure there are no obvious hiding spots or suspicious people watching nearby. When you get your cash from the machine put it away immediately, take out your card, and walk away.

If you use your car at a bank drive-thru ATM machine the same rules apply. Keep your doors locked and the car in gear, with your foot firmly on the brake, during the time using the ATM machine. If there are, listen to your inner instinct and drive away. Thieves almost always from the hinterland on the drivers’ side. Keep a cork eye on your back and side view mirrors during the transaction. If you are confronted by an armed robber, just give up your legal tender without argument. If you see anyone approaching, drive off even if it provision leaving your ATM card behind. Go to a safe dot and call the police immediately. The cash is not valuation serious harm or death.
