The most well-known of these crossings is the Skunk, which was bred in the seventies in the USA. The clear advantage of such a hybrid is that all good characteristics are united like good Taste, nice high effect and short flowering time. It has an almost as strong effect as the Sativa, however a reduced blooming phase of approximately 50 to 70 days. As of 2000, eight states had passed laws allowing seriously ill patients to take marijuana as a prescription pain-control substance. THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, has a biological impact that distinguishes it from legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol. Some argue that permitting marijuana to be used for medical purposes would lead to an increase in recreational use and pressure to legalize the drug. In 1999, the National Institute on Drug Abuse categorized more than two million people as dependent on marijuana based on such criteria. THC releases dopamine, a naturally produced chemical that stimulates a feeling of euphoria; as dopamine supplies are exhausted, people using marijuana show withdrawal symptoms.
